What is Vaman?

Vaman is the first of the five Panchakarma therapies โ€” a precisely administered, physician-supervised procedure in which medicated preparations are given to induce controlled therapeutic vomiting. This expels accumulated Kapha and associated toxins from the upper gastrointestinal tract, lungs, and related tissues.

Far from being simply induced vomiting, Vaman is a highly technical medical procedure. The medicines used, the preparation process, the number of emesis episodes, and the post-procedure care are all precisely specified in classical texts and require an experienced physician to administer safely and effectively.

Conditions Treated by Vaman

  • Bronchial asthma and chronic respiratory conditions
  • Allergic rhinitis and sinusitis
  • Skin diseases โ€” psoriasis, eczema, urticaria, vitiligo
  • Obesity and metabolic syndrome
  • PCOD and hormonal imbalances (Kapha type)
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Nausea, loss of appetite, indigestion
  • Epilepsy (as adjunct therapy)

The Vaman Procedure

1

Deepana-Pachana (3โ€“5 days)

Herbs to stimulate digestive fire and digest accumulated toxins, preparing them for elimination.

2

Snehapana (3โ€“7 days)

Internal administration of medicated ghee in increasing doses to saturate the tissues and mobilise deep-seated toxins towards the gut.

3

Abhyanga + Svedana (1โ€“3 days)

Full-body oil massage followed by steam therapy to further loosen and mobilise toxins.

4

Vaman Karma (1 day)

On an empty stomach in the morning, specific Vaman-inducing medicines are administered. The physician monitors closely, counting emesis episodes and assessing the quality of the expelled material to determine completion.

5

Samsarjana Krama (7 days)

A carefully graded dietary rehabilitation โ€” beginning with thin rice gruel and progressively reintroducing normal foods โ€” to rebuild Agni and the gut microbiome.

Safety & Contraindications

Vaman is contraindicated in children under 7, adults over 80, during pregnancy, in cases of severe emaciation, heart conditions, or active bleeding disorders. Our physicians conduct a thorough pre-procedure assessment to ensure Vaman is appropriate and safe for every patient.
