Basti โ The Most Powerful Panchakarma
The Charaka Samhita states: "Ardha chikitsa" โ "half the treatment." This is how highly classical Ayurveda regards Basti. Of all the Panchakarma therapies, Basti is considered the most powerful and therapeutically versatile โ because it directly addresses Vata, the master dosha that governs all movement and elimination in the body.
Basti involves the administration of medicated substances โ oil (Anuvasana Basti) or decoction (Niruha/Asthapana Basti) โ via the rectum. The large intestine is the primary seat of Vata; by treating it directly, Basti produces systemic effects throughout the body.
Types of Basti
Anuvasana Basti
Oil-based enema, retained in the colon. Primarily nourishing and lubricating โ used for Vata disorders, debility, and after Niruha Basti.
Niruha / Asthapana Basti
Decoction-based enema with multiple ingredients including herbs, honey, salt, and oil. Primarily cleansing โ removes Vata and associated toxins.
Uttar Basti
Medicated enema administered via the urethra (in men) or uterus (in women). Specifically for urinary and reproductive disorders. Learn more โ
Karma Basti (30 Bastis)
The classical full course โ a sequence of 30 Bastis alternating Anuvasana and Niruha. Used for complex chronic conditions.
Kala Basti (16 Bastis)
A shorter course of 16 Bastis for moderate conditions.
Yoga Basti (8 Bastis)
The shortest standard course of 8 Bastis for milder conditions and general Vata management.
Conditions Treated by Basti
- All Vata disorders โ joint pain, neurological conditions, constipation
- Infertility โ directly nourishes the reproductive tissues
- Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
- Parkinson's disease, paralysis, multiple sclerosis (adjunct)
- Lower back pain and sciatica
- Irritable bowel syndrome and chronic constipation
- PCOD and hormonal disorders
- Emaciation and nutritional deficiencies
- Skin diseases with Vata component
Basti in Infertility Treatment
Basti is central to Ayurvedic infertility treatment because it directly nourishes Apana Vata โ the subdosha that governs the downward movement in the body, including menstruation, conception, and parturition. Correcting Apana Vata through Basti creates the optimal physiological environment for implantation and foetal development.
