What is Avagaha Sweda?
Avagaha means "immersion" and Sweda means "sweating" or "heat therapy." Avagaha Sweda is a type of Ayurvedic fomentation (Svedana) in which the patient sits or lies immersed in a tub of warm medicated decoction prepared from specific herbs. The combination of heat, herbs, and immersion creates a powerful therapeutic effect that penetrates the pelvic region and lower abdomen.
Unlike a simple herbal bath, Avagaha Sweda uses precisely formulated decoctions selected based on the patient's condition โ the herbs, temperature, duration, and frequency are all determined by the treating physician.

Role in Infertility Treatment
Avagaha Sweda plays a supporting role in our infertility protocols, particularly following Uttar Basti. The medicated sitz bath helps reduce pelvic inflammation, improve endometrial blood flow, and support the healing of the uterine lining. Herbs commonly used include Dashmool (ten roots), Triphala, Nirgundi, Guduchi, and other anti-inflammatory and uterine-supportive plants.
The Procedure
A session typically lasts 20โ30 minutes. The patient sits in a specially designed Avagaha tub filled with a warm medicated decoction prepared fresh each session. The temperature is carefully monitored and maintained throughout. The procedure may be followed by a brief Abhyanga or rest period. A course of 7โ14 sessions is typically recommended, often integrated within a broader Panchakarma or infertility treatment programme.
